Eagle Butte man sentenced for Assault by Strangulation and Suffocation

    June 21, 2021

    By Jody Heemstra

A 27 year old man from Eagle Butte convicted of Assault by Strangulation and Suffocation was sentenced by a federal judge in U.S. District Court.

Seth Stadel, a/k/a Seth Carter was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on June 10, 2020, near Lantry, South Dakota, wherein Stadel assaulted his intimate partner by grabbing her by the throat and strangling her until she began to lose consciousness. When she tried to run away, Stadel tackled her, breaking her arm.
This case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case.

Stadel was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
