HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) – A woman who pled guilty to four counts of animal torture is set to spend 310 days in jail.
23-year-old Alexandra McGan was caught on surveillance video choking and dragging dogs in her care while working at Southside Animal Hospital.
Doctor Chandra Werner says her practice has always been about the animals.
“Southside’s been a safe place,” Werner said. “We try to design it for animals to come in and wag their tail.”
When Dr. Werner found disturbing surveillance video of one of her workers, she was in disbelief.
“For me, it was especially crushing because I wanted a veterinary practice that animals were happy to get into,” Werner said.
The video above is just one of multiple surveillance clips, the rest of which we have left out of our story, or blurred, because of the nature of the videos.
The blurred video shows McGan visibly choking, kneeling on, and abusing several dogs inside of the hospital’s back room.
“There was a change in her personality over the last three to six months,” Werner noted.
Werner says as she and her employees all viewed the video, she couldn’t understand how a near three-year employee could show such disdain for the animals.
“There was not a dry eye in the house…with anger, hurt,” Werner said. “Kentucky is the worst state to live in if you’re a dog. The rights for our animals, you get one free pass, you can pretty much do whatever you want, it’s considered a misdemeanor.”
McGan faced four misdemeanors, with all sentences to run consecutively.
Even though the dogs in this case have recovered and are all right, the employees say 310 days is nowhere near enough.
Doctor Werner says they’re now much more wary of the people they bring in, and that she follows the dogs leads.
“Reviewing those tapes, I learned so much on how the animals behave, so I can identify quickly,” Werner said.
McGan will begin to serve her sentence on March 4.
