A Texas father shot dead his wife and her two children — and then turned the gun on himself — months after he was arrested for domestic violence, police said.
Police were called to an Amarillo home on Saturday following a 911 call from a relative and found the bodies of Jose David Olmos, 42, Jessica Rose Olmos, 33, and her two children, Daniel and Jazale Garcia, each with multiple gunshot wounds, KAMR Local 4 News reported.
Jose David Olmos, a 42-year-old electrician, appears to have shot the three dead before turning the gun on himself, police say.
He had been arrested in May on charges of assaulting a family member before being released on a $5,000 bond.
He had struck his wife with his hand and was ordered not to have any contact with her or the children and to take an alcohol education course, court documents show.
“Jessica had recently returned back to the home to reconcile the marriage to try to make it better and the children also lived in the home at the time,” James Clements with the Amarillo Police Department’s homicide unit told the outlet.
Jose Olmos was also convicted and sentenced to one year in 2001 for possession of marijuana and 90 days in 2008 for DWI, the outlet reported.
He was not supposed to have access to the gun, which belonged to his wife, Clements said.
The children were also Jessica’s and had no relation to Jose, Clements added.
Loved ones expressed shock over the devastating murders, which came months after the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, according to Mail Online.
“Oh Jessica Olmos! I’m so sorry that I couldn’t help you out of this,” family friend Clara Nunez wrote on Facebook.
“Jazale and Daniel are amazing kids. I promise you that I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that you’ll be remembered forever. It doesn’t end here I promise!” she added.
Jessica worked as an officer manager for Jess Bara State Farm Agency while her daughter, who was in 7th grade, was a skilled wrestler, according to the outlet. It was not immediately clear how old Daniel, the youngest child, was.
Her stepdaughter Arianna Olmos noticeably omitted her father while paying tribute to the murdered family.
“When I was told three of the most caring souls I knew gained their angel wings my heart sunk and broke into pieces,” she wrote.
“Jazale my baby I’m going to miss that smile of yours, your laugh, and goofy faces. Daniel I will miss your smile and your love for cars. Jessica, I was thankful to have someone like you as a stepmom and still showed me love and cared for me.”
She continued: “I’m grateful that God had put you and the kids in my life. I can’t even put into words how hurt I am.”
The Amarillo Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the incident.
